Seeing the benefits of optimizing technology while simultaneously responding innovatively to a community concern, inspired me to volunteer for FIRST Access. This program enables students with special needs to participate in STEM activities. Observing how the students felt valued, included, and motivated to rise above their obstacles, was a powerful testament to each person’s unique strengths and potential for productivity. I was grateful for this enriching experience, and thought about how I could help empower students to aspire to broader academic horizons regardless of their socio-economic background. I wanted to promote an environment of social inclusion.
